 In What To Watch

Dave Chappelle returns to your TV. The Dark Crystal has a new series out. Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift each have double-digit Moon Person nominations. Get your TiVo remote, here’s all the new stuff this week on TV, Netflix, Prime, and more.

Monday August 26

MTV Video Music Awards

Fire hip hop artists like Lizzo and Lil Nas X will be taking the stage with “Bad Guy” Billie Eilish, DaBaby, Lil Tecca, and a bunch of artists we are definitely cool and with it enough to know.

Live event, MTV. Monday August 26, 9pm. Special.

Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones

“If you say anything, you risk everything” promises this trailer. Dave is back for his fifth Netflix Original.

Comedy, Netflix. Monday August 26. Special.

Tuesday August 27

The Devil You Know

Viceland reports, “this is the bizarre true story of a local Satanist, his house of horrors, and his reputation as a suspected cannibal murderer.”⁣ Oh dear.

Documentary, Viceland. Tuesday August 27, 10pm. New.

Wednesday August 28

Animal Babies: First Year on Earth

Ahhh, cute baby animals. That’s what I need after that last trailer. Wait hold on… life begins with “instant struggles to survive”??  What are we getting ourselves into?

Documentary/Nature, PBS. Wednesday August 28, 8pm. Miniseries.

The Challenge: War of the Worlds 2

“A brave new war” with the “bloodiest battles,” promises this trailer. It’s 14 Brits vs. 14 Americans in the middle of the jungle, and they are each ready to risk it all for their share of the $1 million-dollar prize. Or (I did the math) $71,428.57 each before taxes.

Reality competition, MTV. August 28, 8pm. Season 34.

Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda

Ex-cop Joe Kenda solved close to 400 homicide investigations. Boy oh boy, that’s got to take a toll on a person. Lt. Kenda opens his “Murder Books” and shares his past in this series. Joe says, “I don’t want to tell these stories. I need to.”

Reality, ID. August 28, 9pm. Season 9.

Jay Leno’s Garage

What if you had a bajillion dollars to spend on cars? Jay opens his garage to share his four-wheeled passion for supercars, restoration projects, and fully shined-up classics.

Reality, CNBC, August 28, 10pm. Season 5.

Thursday August 29

Growing Up Hip Hop: New York

“In New York City,” the show description reads, “hip-hop heirs navigate their complicated love lives and hustle hard to become more than just the sons and daughters of their famous parents.” And I thought I had it bad.

Reality, WE. Thursday August 29, 9pm. New.

Friday August 30

Big Family: The Story of Bluegrass Music

Beedle dom doppa dum twang twang. Admit it. It’s one of your guilty pleasures. And now you have the overwhelming urge to tune into PBS and watch 2 hours of comprehensive history of the genre.

Documentary/Music, PBS. Friday August 30, 9pm. Special.

Carnival Row

Game-changing top model (and actress) Cara Delevigne teams up with Orlando Bloom in what looks like some kind of a steampunk meets Sherlock Holmes meets Fairyland meets Harry Potter meets North and South (it’s a big meeting) epic. Awesome cast, ambitious genre blending, and plenty of fantasy to fill the GoT sized holes in our hearts. We’ll be there.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

The original Henson movie was up there as one of the weirdest/coolest things we saw growing up, and we’re psyched to have our minds blown again in 2019 with more Podlings, Skeksies, Gelflings, and (hopefully) a reappearance of Fizzgig. It’s been updated with fancier effects but still features many of the same characters you loved in the first place. Check it out on Netflix Friday August 30.

Family/Drama/Fantasy, Netflix. Friday August 30th. New.
