The wait is almost over – THE RINGS OF POWER, the much-anticipated prequel series to THE LORD OF THE RINGS premieres September 2nd on Amazon Prime.  The previous films have grossed almost $3 billion dollars, so there’s a ton of interest around the world. Reportedly even Amazon’s Jeff Bezos is a major fan.  Let’s look at why…

The films are based on a series of books written by J.R. R. Tolken, a British writer who penned the first novel, The Hobbit in 1937.  It was so popular, his publisher begged for a sequel and 17 years later he produced The Lord of the Rings, often divided into three parts due to its length of over 1,100 pages.  People loved the complexity of the stories and intriguing characters as well as the epic struggle between good and evil; all made accessible by Tolken’s evocative prose.  Over 150 million copies of Tolken’s books have been sold – not bad for a former English Professor!  And are those books worth money – a signed The Lord of the Rings first edition sold for $104,000 at auction.

In October 1999, New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson began filming cinematic adaptations in New Zealand, resulting in a trilogy of acclaimed movies – THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, THE TWO TOWERS and THE RETURN OF THE KING.  They were a worldwide sensation, and THE RINGS OF POWER is aiming to capture just as many enthusiastic fans!  The first season, consisting of 8 episodes, drew inspiration from Tolken’s 1977 book, The Silmarillion, published after the writer’s 1973 death and edited by his son.  Set in the Second Age of Middle-Earth, THE RINGS OF POWER will feature established characters like Galadriel and Isildur, but also introduce some new ones!  The Amazon production team used New Zealand’s stunning scenery to great effect, creating the Island kingdom of Númenor and the elf city of Lindon, among others.

THE RINGS OF POWER joins the multi-generational THE LORD OF THE RINGS party and will boldly write a new chapter.  The attention to detail and dedication to established lore should satisfy even the most ardent fans with a rich, Tolkenesque world that is both familiar and new.  The adventure begins September 2nd on Amazon Prime!
