Digital TV Europe, a respected resource for information and analysis on digital and pay-TV in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, recently released their fourth annual survey of international industry executives.

The 2019 Industry Survey is a result of feedback from 560 respondents representing 64 countries. In partnership with leading technology companies, the report assesses the views of worldwide leaders on key aspects of the evolving digital TV landscape, including: emerging technology choices such as Android TV™ and BYOD (“bring your own device”); HbbTV (Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV) as a way to extend the life of terrestrial TV platforms; the rise of OTT live streaming, and the growing importance of ultra-fast broadband networks. TiVo contributed to the section of the report analyzing the future of the set-top box.

Some key takeaways:

  • Of the principal choices facing operators, respondents indicate the Android TV Operator Tier platform offers the greatest benefit, as it gives operators prime access to content via the Google Play™ Store and can be deployed quickly and easily.
  • Respondents were overwhelmingly positive about the benefits of BYOD in theory while acknowledging its challenges, namely the view that operators can’t ensure the prominence of their own services in a BYOD environment.
