BBQ Brawl: Flay V. Symon

Reality. Thursday, August 1. Food, 9pm. New.

Just in time for summer, host Bobby Flay goes up against fellow Iron Chef Michael Symon in this four-episode spectacle. Watch and learn as Bobby and Michael school eight competitive BBQers.

Flip or Flop

Reality. Thursday, August 1. HGTV, 9pm. New. Season 9.

Each episode begins with the once-married couple Tarek El Moussa and Christina Anstead making a cash purchase at house auction, often taking the risk of buying sight unseen. We then watch them attempt to flip it, and then see if it sells… or if it flops.

Reality. Thursday, August 1. HGTV, 11pm. New.

Duo Mary and Jon Pierre Tjon-Joe-Pin turn dumpy homes with serious renovation challenges into charming and affordable properties.

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team

Reality. Friday, August 2. CMT, 9pm. Season 14.

In keeping with yearly tradition, the search for the newest members of the Dallas Cowboys cheerleading squad will be televised. And the competition will be fierce… past seasons have included a former USA gymnast and a biomedical engineer. Who will have the honor of wearing blue and white?

Chinle High School’s basketball team is on a quest to win the state championships and bring pride to their small community in the heart of Arizona’s Navajo Nation. Join the team for the dramatic ups and downs on their hopeful mission to win state.

A Black Lady Sketch Show

Comedy. Friday, August 2. HBO, 11p. New.

Created, written, and starring Robin Thede (The Rundown with Robin Thede, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore), and executive produced by co-star Issa Rae (Awkward Black Girl, Insecure), the show features sketches performed by a cast of Black female comedians and celebrity guests.

Dear White People

Comedy/Drama. Friday, August 2.  Netflix. Season 3.

Justin Simien’s Netflix original (an adaptation of his 2014 film of the same title) follows a group of Black students of an Ivy League school. It focuses on campus radio show host Sam White (Logan Browning) and her friends and tackles issues from racism, to bullying, abortion, and the alt-right. Simien promises season 3 “will be crazy,” and will feature new guest cast members including Blair Underwood, Laverne Cox, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Flavor Flav. And the narrator, played by Giancarlo Esposito, will appear on screen this season.

Derry Girls

Comedy. Friday, August 2. Netflix. Season 2.

We don’t want to say anything about season 2, because it already premiered in Ireland in March… which means that the internet is filthy with spoilers. So just watch it asap.

Descendants 3

Musical/Family. Friday, August 2. Disney, 8pm. Movie.

The teen offspring of Disney’s evilest villains are back on the Isle of the Lost to recruit a new batch of villainous offspring. Mal (Dove Cameron), Evie (Sofia Carson), Carlos (Cameron Boyce) and Jay (BooBoo Stewart) must protect the kingdom from nemeses Uma (China Anne McClain) and Hades (Cheyenne Jackson).

Into the Dark: School Spirit

Drama/Horror. Friday, August 2. Hulu.

A group of teens who would otherwise never associate with each other assemble in detention. Then things go terribly wrong. It’s like if the Breakfast Club went horror.

A Lover Scorned

MOVIE Drama. Friday, August 2. LMN, 8pm. Movie

Brooke (Emilie de Ravin of Lost, Once Upon a Time) seeks to regain a sense of value from her loveless marriage through an affair with Jake (Leo Howard of G.I. Joe), an aggressive insurance agent. They get the notion to murder Brooke’s husband Stephen (Jeffrey Vincent Parise, Supernatural) and collect on his life insurance policy. But then plot twist… Jake becomes kind of psycho… who knew? Brooke is left to pick up the pieces before she becomes a victim.

Lonely and forgotten on Mother’s Day, three suburban moms (Patricia Arquette, Angela Bassett, and Felicity Huffman) road trip to New York City to reconnect with their grownup sons and set them straight. Turns out their sons are not the only ones whose lives need to change.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

Orphan Adora discovers a magic sword that transforms her into a warrior princess known as She-Ra. She-Ra connects with a group of like-minded magical princesses who all have a common goal: to fight evil. In season 3, things get tricky when her friends decide to hang back with the evil Horde. Magical warriors can be so fickle.

Racing Wives

Lake Norman, N.C.: Home of the royal families of stock car racing. We’ll get a taste of how “the other half” of the racing world lives. Samantha Busch, Ashley Busch, Amber Balcaen, Whitney Ward Dillon and Mariel Lane star.

This Is Football

Documentary/Sports. Friday, August 2. Prime Video. Miniseries.

A thoughtful look at the impact of football (or soccer to some) on humans of different races, genders, cultures and beliefs across all of the Earth’s continents. The show explores universal themes of the human experience and the sport’s unique role in it – from the rebuilding of Rwanda after genocide, to the dedication behind the rise of women’s football, to stories where the love of the game transcends adversity. It also highlights, of course, the global joy of watching a well-played match.

90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days

Look, I paused this show 15 times in the first 8 minutes just to question everything. People put their lives on hold to fly across the world and propose to someone they just met on a dating app. Publicly. On television. And they seriously, really mean it. A couple decade age difference, other relationships, gunfire, the jungles of the Amazon, the other person not being into it… nothing stands in their way.

Alaskan Bush People

Reality. Sunday, August 4. Discovery, 9pm. Season 10.

The Browns are a family of survivalists in the winter wilderness, struggling to build the infrastructure for their family ranch. This reality-documentary series follows Billy, Ami and their seven adult children who are so far away from civilization that they’ll go a half a year without seeing someone from outside of the “wolf pack” as they call themselves. According to Billy, “each one of the guys” has to “have their houses finished before the snow locks up.”

Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: A Game of Cat and Mouse

Drama. Sunday, August 4. HMM/Hallmark, 9pm. Movie.

Someone is leaving messages at crime scenes, and Librarian-turned-sleuth Aurora Teagarden (Candace Cameron Bure) is not about to be toyed with.  When it becomes apparent that jealousy over Aurora’s new relationship might be motivating the crime spree, things get personal. Also starring Niall Matter and Marilu Henner.

As if dealing with hellish characters and being taken over by other-worldly powers isn’t enough to deal with while trying to keep his dad’s church running, Jessie now has to face the apocalypse in season 4. “Preacher,” based on the 1990s dark comic book franchise of the same name, is produced by Sam Catlin (“Breaking Bad”), Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (“Superbad,” “Neighbors”).

Worst Cooks in America

Fourteen terrible cooks are sorted into teams and then challenged to recreate exact signature dishes of host celebrity chefs Anne Burrell and Bobby Flay. Some will stick around for the next episode, and others won’t last that long. Meet the recruits here.
