Daily service connection

Whether connecting via broadband or traditional phone line, the TiVo Digital Video Recorder (DVR) automatically schedules a connection to the TiVo service at a randomly selected time, every 24 to 48 hours, to download program guide data. If the call does not succeed, the DVR will try again within 24 hours.

  • If you are using a broadband connection, the DVR will make a connection to the TiVo servers every 15 minutes to check for programs that you may have scheduled through TiVo Central Online. The DVR does not download any program guide data; it only checks for new programs to record. If you do not have a broadband connection, the DVR will only check for remotely scheduled programs every 24 to 48 hours.

  • If you are using a phone connection, remember that the modem in your TiVo DVR cannot dial out if the phone is in use, and it will release the line immediately if you pick up the phone to make a connection to the TiVo service. The DVR should never interfere with your telephone use.

  • If you see a message that your Program Guide Data is out of date, try forcing a connection to the TiVo service. For instructions, go to How Do I Connect to the TiVo Service? If the DVR cannot make a successful connection, go to Phone Call Troubleshooting Guide. After the DVR successfully connects, you will see one more message that your Program Guide Data is out of date; you can ignore this.

For 4 to 8 hours after making your connection to the TiVo service, your Program Guide Data may show "TBA" with descriptions that read "Program titles and descriptions available soon." This means that your DVR is indexing. During this time, you can watch any channels and use any play features (fast forward, rewind, and pause). You cannot start a recording until the indexing is finished.
