The world said hello to Sochi last night, but perhaps more importantly, Sochi said “Zdravstvujtye” to the world. In a spectacle worthy of Cecil B. DeMille, the 22nd Winter Olympic Games began with aerial acrobatics, Russian classical music, a human light show, more Russian classical music, and floats accompanied by—you guessed it—Russian classical music. With 40,000 people in attendance, Fisht Olympic Stadium played host to 88 national delegations, the singing group t.A.T.u., a talking bear, and tennis player (and Sochi native) Maria Sharapova. Here are the top five moments of last night’s NBC telecast of the event that captured the most attention of viewers here in the States:
