John Travolta must be a lucky charm when it comes to movie music—he stars in 3 of the top 10 films TiVo users voted as containing their favorite soundtracks. Grease is a given when it comes to talking about movies with great music, from “Summer Nights” to “Greased Lightning,” the songs in this film stick in your head…even when you don’t want them to. And although Travolta looks awfully sharp in a white polyester suit, the only reason anyone remembers Saturday Night Fever is because of the disco hits of the Bee Gees. The soundtrack receiving the most votes, however, belongs to Pulp Fiction. A critical and commercial success, this film got everything right…including the music.
Several of the soundtracks topping the list include songs that won Oscars for Best Original Song, including “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” from Dirty Dancing, “Take My Breath Away” from Top Gun, and “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic. And while I’m sure the soundtrack for Titanic includes lots of really lovely instrumental music, I bet a million bucks (hypothetically, of course) that no one can name another song on that soundtrack besides Celine Dion’s incessantly played theme song.
Not surprisingly, some of the most memorable movies from the 1980s made the list, including Footloose, Pretty in Pink, and The Breakfast Club, while music from the 1990s is well represented in the soundtracks for Singles and Empire Records. What is surprising is that only two people voted for the soundtrack to Jim Henson’s Labyrinth—two people who obviously have very good taste. For those of you who haven’t seen Labyrinth, take some time to watch this amazing movie, along with Henson’s other creations, by checking out our “Jim Henson Presents” Collection.
