TiVo’s Most Watched Oscar Moments Of The Night!   by

According to TiVo audience research measurement data from last night’s 85th annual Academy Awards, TiVo users were moved by heartfelt acceptance speeches, like that from Christoph Waltz, and the musical montages. Perhaps due to the long telecast, TiVo’s top five moments all occurred in the first 45 minutes of the show. Also, three of the top five moments were host Seth MacFarlane’s skits or jokes. That’s three more than last year’s show host, Billy Crystal, had in TiVo’s 2012 top five moments (see the 2012 top moments here)! Interestingly enough, Jennifer Lawrence tripping on the stairs when collecting her best actress award was the #11 moment according to TiVo viewers.

TiVo’s second-by-second data recognized the following top ten “TiVo’ed” moments (most watched and re-watched moments*) from last night’s red carpet and Academy Awards telecast on ABC:

  1. Christoph Waltz wins for Best Supporting Actor of Django Unchained and his heartfelt speech (8:50 pm ET)
  2. Seth MacFarlane imitating the Flying Nun in the Green Room with Sally Field (8:45 pm ET)
  3. Melissa McCarthy and Paul Rudd talking about their lack of animation work (8:56 pm ET)
  4. Seth MacFarlane joking about how Best Actress nominee for Beasts of the Southern Wild, Quvenzhané Wallis, is the youngest nominee ever (9:04 pm ET)
  5. Captain Kirk (aka William Shatner) appears from the future to tell Seth he needs to fix his hosting performance (8:35 pm ET)
  6. Following the clips for Argo, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty, Seth MacFarlane does a short monologue about each film (9:41 pm ET)
  7. 50 Years of Bond” musical montage is celebrated (9:22 pm ET)
  8. Jennifer Aniston teases Channing Tatum about being waxed for a role while presenting the award for Achievement in Costume Design (9:16 pm ET)
  9. The second musical montage of the night celebrates film musicals – Chicago, Dreamgirls and Les Misérables (9:54 pm ET)
  10. Anne Hathaway wins for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Les Misérables (10:22 pm ET)

Red Carpet hosts Kristin Chenoweth and Kelly Rowland’s interviews were very popular with TiVo viewers as well. The top 5 Moments from ABC’s Red Carpet show were:

  1. Kristin Chenoweth and Renée Zellweger talking about their (Texas/Oklahoma) football rivalry and Zellweger’s dress
  2. Kristin Chenoweth asking Queen Latifah whether she would consider hosting the Oscars
  3. Anne Hathaway discussing her dress with Kristin Chenoworth and guessing the “Oscars Mystery Box” contents right
  4. Kelly Rowland revealing the best dressed of the day – Jennifer Lawrence, Charlize Theron, Kristin Stewart and Halle Berry
  5. Jamie Foxx and his daughter being interviewed (and getting flirty) with Kelly Rowland

As the highest-rated entertainment program on television, The Academy Awards Ceremony is the Super Bowl of the entertainment industry in regards to advertising. Consumers expect advertisers to deliver during the Oscars, and this year they were under more pressure than ever. Advertisers paid ABC the highest prices since 2008 for their spots. According to Debbie Richman, the senior vice president for prime-time ABC sales, demand was the strongest it’s been in over a decade. The following advertisements did their due diligence, as the seven most re-watched ads by TiVo viewers:

  1. Movie spot for The Heat with Bullock and McCarthy (11:20 pm ET)
  2. Galaxy Note ad featuring Tim Burton (11:30 pm ET)
  3. Grey Poupon ad that looks like a James Bond clip (11:30 pm ET)
  4. A promo for Nashville with Hayden Panaettiere singing the theme to Fame (10:27 pm ET)
  5. Movie spot for Oz The Great and Powerful (10:06 pm ET)
  6. Royal Caribbean with Kristin Chenoweth (10:07 pm ET)
  7. Dancing With the Stars promo featuring Baltimore Ravens Jacoby Jones (9:47 pm ET)

So thank you Seth MacFarlane, Kristin Chenoweth and upcoming movies! You made the 85th annual Academy Awards that much more fun to watch… and re-watch.
