TiVo’s Best Bet Recordings: August 16, 2011
This week in TV you can find out who will become a MasterChef. Find out how to Love in the Wild. You can even Strike Back towards the end of the week. Don’t forget to set-up your TiVo® DVR so you don’t miss any of these great picks!
What Not to Wear: If you think makeover shows are a waste of time because real people can’t afford such drastic changes, you haven’t seen this smart little series — and why not? It’s been on for eight seasons and starts No. 9 tonight. To be sure, there is some spending involved — style-challenged participants are given $5,000 to spend on new clothes — but even the broke can benefit from Stacy London and Clinton Kelly’s advice on what looks good on whom.
Melissa & Joey: Melissa Joan Hart is 35 — is that too young to be a cougar? In this new episode, Hart’s character, Mel Burke, becomes involved with a younger man. Power, not romance, takes priority for her niece, Lennox (Taylor Spreitler), who challenges a classmate for the position of editor of the school blog. Joey Lawrence and Nick Robinson also star in “Young Love.”
NFL Preseason Football: A preseason battle for bragging rights in the state of Pennsylvania is on tap tonight in Pittsburgh, where Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers defend home turf from Michael Vick and the resurgent Philadelphia Eagles. Both teams are coming off successful seasons in 2010: The Steelers are the defending AFC champs who lost in Super Bowl XLV to the Green Bay Packers, while the Eagles survived a quarterback controversy to win the NFC East.
Tanked: Now here’s something you don’t see every day: a docu-series based on the business of specialty aquarium building. This six-parter takes viewers into the deafening family business of Acrylic Tank Manufacturing. Based in Las Vegas, brothers-in-law, business partners and rivals Brett Raymer and Wayde King take on unbelievably daunting aquarium builds inside restaurants, casinos and churches, for celebrities and everyday Joes.
Country Strong: Gwyneth Paltrow proves herself an able singer in this 2010 drama of a troubled country music star on the road to redemption. After a stay in rehab, she resumes her career under the guidance of her manager husband (actual country star Tim McGraw). However, he poses a big hurdle for her by adding an ambitious newcomer (Leighton Meester, “Gossip Girl”) to her shows. Garrett Hedlund (“Tron: Legacy”) also stars. The song “Coming Home” was Oscar-nominated.
